We operate under the belief that no cause is worth drinking a bad cup of coffee. Every bean roasted and distributed as Phoenix Community Coffee is examined at the source to ensure maximum quality and sustainability. Through partnerships with farms and co-ops we are able to equip natives to grow their own coffee, co-op with other local farms, grade their coffee, and export is for the highest market value.
The coffee industry goes much deeper than the grocery store shelf you pick your coffee from. Coffee is a plant, and more specifically, a fruit. When ripe, the coffee berry actually looks most like a grape. And since great coffee is produced in mountainous regions under dense shade, it cannot be combined like most agricultural products which makes it difficult to farm. For that reason, coffee is picked by hand. In Central America in particular, most of the workers who pick the coffee are local, indigenous workers who migrate into the coffee regions during harvest season and return to their homes following the harvest. To meet the demand of cheaper coffee on American shelves, these migrant pickers are among the first to be exploited in order to cut costs.
The countrysides of coffee growing regions are full of coffee farms. In these areas, from huge plantations to single families growing a few hundred pounds, coffee sales are pivotal to the success of the community. Unfortunately, big business often finds footholds to oppress and exploit many third world coffee farmers. In one instance, a farm in Honduras was receiving as little as 10 cents a pound for their coffee. In another instance, a farm was traded bags of food in exchange for their entire coffee crop. Part of Phoenix Community Coffee’s mission is to prevent any future stories like this by purchasing coffee directly from international farms. Buying the coffee direct from the farm at an ethical wage (at or above market value), ensures an increase wage to farms and trickles down to their migrant pickers.
The Phoenix Community Coffee roasting facility is located in Duluth, GA and strives to be a source of relief to the the local and international community. Through intentional community mobilization, not only are the proceeds from each pound supporting community focused servants, but are also allowing The Phoenix Community Coffee Team to partner with other organizations seeking the transformation of lives. The focus is relief. Yes, we enjoy coffee. But if the day comes when we care more about the GREAT COFFEE than the GREAT CAUSES we support, then we have been a great failure.
